Want to help the Orbivm project? Here's how you can.

First of all, visit http://opensvn.csie.org/ImperialEra/ to see the Orbivm SVN repository. If you want to check out the repository, you can do so on Linux by running
Code:
svn co http://opensvn.csie.org/ImperialEra/ imperial

which makes an SVN checkout in the directory ./imperial/. You would then update with "svn update" from inside ./imperial/. If you don't want to make an SVN checkout, you can still browse the repository through the above link.

There's also the Orbivm wiki, at http://orbivm.scribblewiki.com/Main_Page, which is a useful resource for the less tech-savvy among us.

So, now that you can see everything that we have so far, what is it that we need?

  • We can always use more artwork. There are 23 new factions planned for Orbivm (2 in the Lost Era, 3 in the Forgotten Era, 5 in the Ancient Era, 7 in the Imperial Era, and 7 in the Feudal Era), and all of them need art. Some of them already have it, but some don't - you can find out which either by browsing the SVN repository or by looking at the faction's page on the Orbivm wiki and seeing if it has artwork on it (though the latter is not guaranteed to be accurate). Feel free to just pick one of the ones that still needs art and start making stuff - chances are very high it will be used, and that you'll very quickly be given SVN access.

  • If you're no good at art, think about writing a campaign. They're not easy, but they're definitely fun to do. You can check out the history pages on the wiki for inspiration, or you can just make a story up - if you do the latter, though, please do check with me to make sure the story will fit with the rest of the world. That's not strictly necessary, but it would suck if you made a campaign and it then had to be rejected because it contradicted something else that couldn't be changed.

  • If you don't want to have to learn WML, you can still help by writing descriptions for units and races. Look at all of the unit files (found in the repository under *_Era/units/*/*.cfg) - many of them have the line description= _ " ", meaning the unit doesn't have a description. It would really help to get some of those descriptions written. If anyone wants to do this but doesn't want to have to look through the unit files one by one to see which ones need descriptions, it would be really easy for me to write a short shell script to get a list of which units don't have descriptions yet.

  • Another way to help is to edit the wiki and fill it out. Anyone can edit any page on the wiki, and you should feel free to do so. Also feel free to add new pages. One helpful thing to do is to click on red links (red means the page doesn't exist yet) and add in the basic data for the page. Also, place [[ ]] around anything that sounds like it should be a page (for example, if I was adding text that mentioned the person Harn Bernson, I would put "[[Harn Bernson]] was advisor to [[Alfric the Conqueror]] and later to [[Alfhelm the Wise]]"). This will make that text be a link to new page.
